Obituary

JOAN ELIZABETH FLYNN
1929 - 2017
After several years of uncertain health, Joan Flynn passed away Saturday December 23, 2017 peacefully in her own home.
She was very much loved by her husband Elwood, sons Barry (Suzanne), Jeffrey, and grandson Kael.
Joan was born in Saskatoon, raised and educated in Rosetown. She moved to Saskatoon in the 50’s to attend University. She worked for Dr. Genereux for a few years. She then moved on to more exciting vocation in Radio at CKOM, where she was head of continuity and radio advertising. Joan also had her own morning live show five days a week.
Joan met Elwood at a mutual family friend’s funeral. After a long term friendship, they were married January 19, 1956. Together Joan and Elwood built quite an interesting group of stores. At one time in the early 70’s they had 5 stores (four in Saskatoon) and one in Regina. Moving to Midtown Plaza in 1970 was a very successful time in their business career. Joan was a vital part of the growth with Town Cobbler and Joan Flynn Apparel. Joan treated all of her customers like royalty. She had a distinct passion for fashion and people. She was a very popular lady.
Joan was very supportive to many charitable programs. She was personally involved in the Mendel Art Gallery in Saskatoon. She was a board member of the Mendel Art Gallery for over 12 years. She was the founding member who organized “Magic of the Mendel” which raised thousands of dollars for the Foundation. Joan never turned down any one who had a genuine good need for support of door prizes and donation dollars.
Joan was a naturally athletic and played basketball on many teams, and she had a Pat Fletcher golf swing. She had a definite talent in cooking passed down from her mother Muriel. She was a very active member of a Gourmet Cooking Club for a number of years. She was a promising artist tutored by Mary Nelson.
Joan and Elwood liked to travel and travelled to some of the most interesting places in the world.
The Flynn family will be forever grateful for the excellent special care given by homecare and the special nurses Nora, Joan, Jan and Mary Ann.

Elwood, Barry and Jeff; We were late to hear the news and now are reflecting on such a wonderful life. 'Mrs. Flynn' was a big part of our life - Mom and Dad's friend, and of course one of our grade's moms. She was 'elegance' in Saskatoon, and a businesswoman - a role model, trailblazer for so many.
She left an imprint, on all she encountered; we remember her so fondly, not the least for bringing some great shoes to Saskatoon - the way to any woman's heart.
May you, in time, remember all the good times; what she left for you in spirit. Thinking of you all at this difficult time. Susan, Keith and the boys, Will and Aidan, and for Mom and Dad who perhaps are greeting Joan with a beverage, somewhere. Susan

I am so sorry for the loss of your Mom.
My Mom, Olive Brownbridge At a time was your Mom’s best friend. She named me your mom’s name as my middle name....Maryse Joan......I remember as a tiny girl, how my mom would take me to the town cobbler, to the back room for sweets. She was so glamorous and kind. I will never forget thoughs moments. It’s been 44 years since my own passed, however, it never makes it easier. Be it a child, or an adult, it is pain. I’m so sorry to you all.
