Obituary of Robert James Crowe

Robert James (Jim) Crowe passed peacefully on Friday, December 29, 2017 at St. Paul's Hospital. Jim was predeceased by his father and mother Robert (Bob) and Merle, his wife of 64 years Agnes (nee Lypka), younger brothers Doug and Jack and son-in-law Keith. He leaves behind to celebrate his life, his sister Vera Edmundson, sisters-in-law Daphne, June and Olga, his children Barbara, Glenn (Lori), Rick and Bill and his beloved 8 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. He also leaves behind numerous Crowe and Edmundson nieces and nephews and Agnes' special nephews Gerald and Brian. Jim was born in Regina on July 3, 1923 to Robert and Merle Crowe. He was fiercely proud of his Saskatchewan prairie roots and fully embraced the four seasons. There was no place he would rather be. At the age of 18 Dad joined the Canadian Army and served overseas during World War II. He trained in England and saw action in North Africa, Italy and the Netherlands. Following the war he continued his service as a Sergeant in the North Saskatchewan Regiment reserves. During the war Jim contracted tuberculosis and upon his return he was hospitalized at the Saskatoon Tuberculosis Sanatorium. It was there where he would meet the love of his life, Agnes. They were married on June 9, 1949. Our father was a proud and dedicated member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch TVS 78. He held various executive positions within the Legion at the local, provincial and national levels including a term as TVS National president from 1980 to 1984. Over the years he advocated for his fellow vets as he aided them in their efforts to access the benefits that they had rightly earned by serving their country during times of war. Jim was a long time employee of the Hudson's Bay Company. He retired from his job in 1985 but not from life. He continued to keep himself busy with the Legion, cribbage and carpet bowling and the gatherings of the Regina Rifles and the Saskatoon Light Infantry alumni. The family would like to give our heartfelt thanks for the compassionate care that was extended to our Dad by the staff at St. Paul's hospital. We also acknowledge the support and kindness shown to Dad by the members of his Legion family. The family will also celebrate him the way he would have it, down at "Wagooch", under the prairie sky, playing horseshoes then roasting marshmallows by the fire while enjoying the best view in Saskatchewan. Goodbye Dad, Your family is at peace knowing that you are now hand in hand with Mom, the prettiest girl you ever met. If desired, donations can be made in memory of Jim to the Canadian Lung Association, the Salvation Army or a charity of choice.
