Obituary of Wesley Duncan Ashwin

Born July 1, 1924, in Prince Albert, SK; Passed July 15, 2018, in Saskatoon following a brief illness. Wes and his wife Doreen, enjoyed 72 years of happy marriage. Surviving are Doreen; sons- Jeff, Jon  (Adeline); daughters- Beverly (Terry Beaulieu); Patricia (Todd) Vogelgesang; grandchildren- Jason (Anna) Ashwin, Kristin (Brad) Zurevinski and Tanner Vogelgesang; brother Patrick (Hamilton); sister-in-law Myrtle Ashwin (Victoria); great granddaughters Gemma Grace, and Ava Jade Ashwin (Calgary), Kendall Marie and Sloane Adeline Zurevinski (Saskatoon); great grandsons- Noah Luke and Jake Cruz Ashwin (Calgary); five grand dogs Lenny, Sally, Bailey, Annie and Flower; as well as many nieces and nephews.  Wes is predeceased by brother Jim and parents Guy & Edith.

Wes served in the RCNVR during WWII as a Visual Signalman on the Minesweeper HMCS Caraquet. Wes took part in the D-Day (June 6, 1944) invasion of Europe.

A graduate of the College of Engineering, U. of S., and of St. Andrew's College, he served the United Church of Canada in several Saskatchewan communities. From 1978 to 1982, he was employed by the Government of Saskatchewan as Deputy Rentalsman for Northern Saskatchewan.

During the International Year of Older Persons, 1999, Wes was Chairperson of the Provincial Advisory Committee for Older Persons and also served as Saskatchewan Representative on the National Coordinating Committee for IYOP '99. In 2002, Wes was awarded the Queen's Golden Jubilee Medal through the Office of the Governor General. In 2011, Wes was awarded the Golden Heart Award by the McClure Place Foundation.

In Recent years, Wes was a member of St. Thomas Wesley United Church. He enjoyed family gatherings and parties, the summer cottage - "Tether's End" at Buffalo Pound Lake, writing, drama, clown ministry, golf and community life at Villa Royale. 

Wes' family would like to thank the staff at St. Paul's Hospital palliative care for all the kindness and compassion shown during his time there.

A celebration of Wes' life will take place at The Saskatoon Funeral Home (338 4th Ave N) on July 23, 2018 at 11:00 am. Colourful attire is appropriate and welcomed at the service. Following the service a reception will be held across the street at the Edwards Family Centre. Interment of cremains will take place in the Veterans' Field of Honor, Woodlawn Cemetery. In lieu of floral tributes, memorial gifts may be made to St. Andrew's College or to St. Thomas Wesley United Church.
