Obituary of Thomas David Roberts Caldwell

CALDWELL,
Thomas David Roberts (Bobs)
1933 - 2019
Thomas David Roberts (Bobs) Caldwell, QC passed away peacefully on March 21, 2019 at Royal University Hospital in Saskatoon, surrounded by his family. He is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Beverley (nee Billyard); son Charles (Patricia) and grandsons Alex and Nick of Saskatoon; son Ted (Marne) of Ithaca, NY; and son Tom (Jeannette) of Regina. He was predeceased by his daughter Janet in 2009. Bobs was born in Cabri, SK, where his father Sandy and mother Jessie operated a small hospital. The family moved in the Forties to Saskatoon, where Bobs attended Albert School, Nutana Collegiate, and the University of Saskatchewan, graduating from the College of Law in 1957. Bobs and Bev were married that same year, and moved to Regina, where he began his career with the Attorney General's Department. In 1962 they moved back to Saskatoon, to the home that they would enjoy for the next 57 years. Bobs's distinguished legal career included 29 years as Chief Crown Prosecutor, as well as serving as a judge on the Provincial Court. Bobs was an active member of Knox United Church, serving a term as President of the Board and making many lasting friendships in the Knox community. He took particular pleasure in serving as an usher and greeter at Knox in his later years. Bobs had a lifelong passion for music, and he is well known for his founding role in two iconic ensembles: The Intensely Vigorous College Nine, with Ray Hnatyshyn at the U of S in the 1950s; and the Bridge City Dixieland Jazz Band, with Joe Campbell in 1967. Bobs will be remembered fondly for his sociability, his sense of humour, and his devotion to his family. He was thrilled to live in such a beautiful setting, in close proximity to five generations of the Rowles/Caldwell clan - and Bev is fond of saying that he could not walk up the University Bridge without running into a dozen friends. A Memorial Service will be held Tuesday, March 26, 2019 at 2:00 p.m. at Knox United Church.Donations in memory of Bobs may be made to the RUH Foundation (ruhf.org). The family extends special thanks to the RUH nursing staff, who did so much to assist and comfort Bobs in his final days.
