Monks, Dr. James G.
1923  -2019

Gerry died peacefully on August 21,2019, at the age of 96, He had a great, long and accomplished life. Gerry was born in Dublin in 1923, to parents Edward and Kathleen. He obtained his medical degree from University College of Dublin in 1947. Shortly after he immigrated to Ottawa, where he met and married Katherine Grant. They moved to Saskatchewan after their marriage and eventually settled in Saskatoon where he worked in pediatrics. In 1956, he moved his family to London England where he studied radiology, after completing his studies they returned to Saskatoon. He became one of the founding partners of Associated Radiologist. He maintained his association with St. Paul's Hospital, serving as Chief of Radiology between 1972 and 1983. He served a term as President of the Saskatchewan Medical association as well as a Board Member on the Canadian Medical Association.
Gerry and Katherine loved to travel. They especially enjoyed their condo in Arizona, where they made many life long friends.
Gerry loved to garden and was especially fond of his begonias at Pike Lake, which is where he loved to entertain friends and family at his annual Pike Lake party.
Gerry was predeceased by his wife Katherine, his parents Edward and Kathleen Monks, as well as his sisters, Dr. Maureen Mackle and Sister Eileen Monks, and brother Vincent, all of Ireland. Gerry is survived by his brother Dr. Eamonn Monks. He is also survived by his five children, Trish (Gerry) Cronin, Mary Lou (Michael) Schwinghammer, Desmond (Karen) Monks, John Monks and Janice (John) Wigle, as well as 16 grandchildren and 14 great grand children.
Nothing brought Gerry more joy than his grandchildren and his great grand children. He would regale them with his stories, entertain them with his humor, educate them with his wisdom and nurture them with his love. He will be greatly missed.
We are very grateful to the caregivers and community at Sherbrooke Community Centre where he spent his remaining days. In lieu of flowers, please consider donations to St. Paul's Hospital Foundation or Sherbrooke Community Centre.
The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, September 20, 2019 at 10:00 am from St. Paul's Cathedral (corner of 22nd St. W and Spadina Cres).
