Margaret Smith
July 10, 1934 – October 10, 2019

Brenda “Margaret” Smith passed away peacefully at Royal University Hospital, Saskatoon, SK on October 10, 2019 at the age of 85.  Margaret was born July 10, 1934 in Nantwich, Cheshire, England to Alfred and Annie Clough where she had a happy childhood.  Her first job was at age 16, at Chatwins Bakery. Margaret graduated from the Queen Elizabeth School of Nursing in Birmingham, England and was the youngest night sister to be employed at a rehabilitation hospital. In 1953, Margaret met a handsome young medical student, Leslie Smith.  They were married in November 1957.  The day after their wedding, neither of them having flown before, they traveled by plane to Dusseldorf followed by train to Munster in Germany. Here, Leslie took a position as Captain in the Royal Army Medical Corp. As a soldier’s wife, Margaret helped many young wives adjust to military life. In 1959, their eldest son, Paul, was born.  In 1962, at the height of the medicare crisis in Saskatchewan, they emigrated to Canada where Leslie was offered a position at the Community Clinic in Prince Albert.  In 1963, their daughter, Juliet, was born.  They moved to Calgary and had two more boys.  Adrian was born in 1965 and Michael followed in 1966.  As a stay at home mother, Margaret took great pride in her family and her children as well as taking time to enjoy a social night out with friends. Margaret had a passion for traveling, and made sure that her children did as well. A couple of her favorite places to visit was Lake Louise and Fairmont. In 1969, Leslie and Margaret returned to England and then moved back to Germany in 1970. In 1974, it was back to England, where they lived in Dover at the Duke of York’s Royal Military School. It was at this time that Margaret began working as a Registered Nurse again.  In 1976, it was back to Canada where they settled down in the small town of Esterhazy, SK for the next twenty-five years. Margaret was an active community member, volunteering on the Ladies Axillary at both St. Antony’s Hospital and the Esterhazy Centennial Care Home.  She regularly attended church and bible study, as well as being an active member of the United Church Women Auxiliary.  She also loved to bake and do crafts. By this time, her children were finishing high school and moving on to University where they started to create lives of their own. In 2000, they were on the move again, this time to Saskatoon. Margaret was so very proud of all her children in their chosen field. She was full of life, fun to be around, and there was never a short conversation.  We will all miss her deeply.  Margaret is survived by her husband, Leslie Smith; son, Paul (Arielis) Smith; daughter, Juliet (Brian) Smith-Fehr; sons, Adrian (Daisy) Smith; Michael (Tracey) Smith; 5 grandchildren, Rachel, Laura, Nicole, Samantha, and Maximillian; sister, Doreen Bailey; and brother, John (Sally) Clough.  Margaret is predeceased by her parents and her brother, Fredrick (Jean) Clough.
