Shirley Schatkoske (nee Hill)

May 27, 1941 – April 17, 2020

Shirley was born in Saskatoon to parents Jim and Florence Hill of the Creekfield/Laura area. She grew up on a farm until the family moved to Delisle in the early ’50s.  After high school, Shirley attended Business College in Saskatoon and went on to work for SaskTel. It was when she took a transfer to Swift Current that she met her future husband, Gordon. They would have been married 58 years this June. Shirley and Gordon moved to Saskatoon in 1979, when their teenage daughter was diagnosed with cancer, so that they could be closer to the treatment hospital. Shirley went back to work with SaskTel after Rhonda passed away in 1981.

Shirley had many talents and hobbies including: curling, sewing, needlepoint, baking, playing the organ, and singing with the Magic City Chorus.  She was an accomplished seamstress but her greatest passion was gardening.  Her flower gardens attracted many admirers. Shirley retired from SaskTel in 2001 so that she could spend more time with her two young granddaughters and devote more time to her many hobbies.

Shirley had a crazy sense of humour and was always up for shenanigans or trying something new. She was caring, talented, determined and a little feisty.  We always said that her nature was due to her red hair (when she was younger).  Shirley was dearly loved and will be greatly missed by her family and many friends.

Shirley is survived by her husband: Gordon, son and daughter-in-law: Kevin and Sandra Schatkoske, her granddaughters: Megan (Blair) Stewart, and Jordon Schatkoske (Brock), her brothers: Sydney (Beatrice) Hill, Don (Penny) Hill, sisters: Sandy (Kendall) Gibson, Arlene (Randy) Hanna. Sisters-in-law: Alice Hill and Irene Stinson, Brothers-in-law:  Carl (Kathy) Schatkoske, and Don Schatkoske and numerous nieces and nephews.  She is predeceased by her daughter: Rhonda, her Mom and Dad: Jim and Florence Hill, her Mother and Father-in-law: Rudolph and Olga Schatkoske.  Sister-in-laws:  Mary (Schatkoske) Collins, Jean Schatkoske.  Brothers-in-law: Lawrence Schatkoske, Ed and Kristi Schatkoske, Floyd Stinson, Ed Hill, Lawrence Collins.

In Appreciation – the family wish to thank the doctors, nurses and caregivers on E1 at Parkridge Nursing Home for their care and attention to Shirley’s needs. Due to Covid 19, there will be a private funeral with interment to follow at Woodlawn Cemetery, Saskatoon. In lieu of flowers, donations in Shirley’s name may be made to:  Ronald McDonald House 1011 University Dr. Saskatoon, SK or Faith Lutheran Church 2801 Preston Ave. S.  Saskatoon, SK.
