FREHLICH - Sophie (nee Glushka)

May 23, 1931 – June 20, 2021

Our mom, Sophie lived a wonderful life. Loving mom, grandma and forever friend, you were loved beyond measure. We draw comfort in knowing you passed away peacefully at home and are no longer struggling with pain and can rest easy now.

Mom was born Sophie Glushka to John and Sophia (nee Stadnyk) in Ituna. Mom was a wonderful influence on our lives and she was incredibly proud of her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, their lives and their achievements. She was a regular presence in our lives and was always there for each of us.

She will forever be loved and missed by her son Dennis Zelizney, grandchild: Brent (Kathi), great-grandchildren: Ethan, Aden; grandchild: Craig (Kelsie), great-grandchildren: Benjamin, Anne-Marie; daughter: Pat Sherwood (Gord MacAulay), grandchildren: Jennifer, Mark (Alena), great-grandchildren: William, Andrew; son: Don Zelizney (Sharon Bold), grandchild: Melissa (Garett) Soparlo, great-grandchildren: Sara, Sylvie; son: Gary (Patti) Zelizney, grandchild: Chelsey (Craig Danish), great-grandchild: Blake; grandchild: Krista Zelizney (Griffin Thomas); daughter Carole (Greg) Mildenberger, and grandchild: Terrell.

Sophie was predeceased by: her husband, Michael Zelizney; and her second husband, Alphonse Frehlich. Sophie outlived her parents, siblings and many life-long friends but she continued to make new friends and touch lives for all 90 years of her life. She was amazing at keeping in touch. You could always count on a call or card on your birthday. Some people have been receiving calls from Sophie for 60 plus years. Sophie touched the lives of many and will be truly missed.  Her energy and interest in finding a reason to gather and keep in touch was the glue that kept us together. We ask that you keep that energy alive in memory of Sophie and continue to share her stories.

Our lasting memories of mom are simple, hard-working and passionate about her family. The Price is Right and curling were rarely missed and when she wasn’t watching curling you’d likely find her reading, and has devoured books on a variety of subjects. She also loved to play cards especially Kaiser and Cribbage.

In Mom’s earlier years she worked full-time, was active in bowling leagues and enjoyed knitting, crocheting and sewing. She was a wonderful homemaker and gardener and an amazing cook specializing in baking and Ukrainian cuisine. Mom passed down these skills to her children and grandchildren. Mom was also actively involved in the building of numerous homes we lived in throughout Saskatoon. She enjoyed camping, fishing and travelling in their RV.

Mom, thank you for the many precious memories you’ve given all of us and the love and warmth, we shared together during your time on earth.  You leave a massive void in our life, but we will draw strength from your example

Viewing will be at Saskatoon Funeral Home at 7:00 pm to 8:30 pm Fri. June 25. Interment will take place Saturday at Woodlawn Cemetery at 1:00 pm followed by a private celebration of life.
