Sandy, I just heard of Ray's passing this morning at church from Olga. So sorry for your loss. Ray was a wonderful man and you were blessed to have had him as your husband for those 60 amazing years. I watched the video of his life and it brought back many great memories of M.P.C.C. I have no idea if you are still in Saskatoon and attend M.P.C.C. and hopefully I will get to see you in the near future. My deepest condolences to you and your entire family. I only wish I had known earlier so I could have been able to attend the celebration of Ray's life and have reunited with the wonderful Sider and church family that I understand had been present to feel God receiving Ray home to heaven. God bless you throughout this time.

Hello Sandy and family. Stefane and I are sorry to hear of Ray’s passing. When Ray agreed to perform our wedding ceremony at MPCC in 1994 he made us take these 1:1 premarital classes. Quite the drive from Flin Flon to Saskatoon each meeting as we worked through the course materials. This had a significant impact on our marriage, family and relationship with God. We echo all that was shared about Ray at the service and thank God that he “made” us do this. I also want to say that it was especially impactful to hear stories and see that he was so in love with you Sandy! We will pray for you! April & Stefane

Dear Sandy and family,
I have so many great memories of you guys. Once in a while I still hear about Timber Bay from my parents. I remember the 2 years when you lived next door to us on Mackie, so many memories of you and Wendy and Debbie while staying at your place as kids. Ray being my Pastor at University Heights during my teen years, it was an important time. Years later I was so happy you came back to MPCC, serving alongside on Leadership I learned so much from my Pastor Ray. Having coffee with him, he was so interested in what was going on in my life and nothing else mattered to him at that moment. It meant a lot for you to have young adults out at your place and also having Victoria and I over for supper during her teen years, it was a full circle moment. I will always remember his deep and caring voice and his sense of humor! May you all find comfort in the days and weeks ahead and hold his memories close and may God bless you all.

I am very sad to hear of your loss Sandy. But rejoice that Ray is with Jesus. Sooooo many good memories to hold in my heart. After Rick died you and Ray had the boys and I up to your home at Camp Kaquah for Father's Day and Ray took them fishing and was a dad to them that day. He was a special guy and you are special as well. Praying for you.

There was once a very strange and wonderful year in my life where I lived at Camp Kahquah, working alongside Ray and Sandy. Ray and I spent many hours in the office together, and he enjoyed passing along bits of hard-earned wisdom, quotes from John Maxwell, and things he’d learned in his many years of leadership. But the best lesson I learned from him involved watermelon and a yellow kayak.
Ray and I disagreed on a few things in our time together, and one of those things was whether or not salt belonged on watermelon. Ray was pro salt, I was against. Ray made a deal with me, that I would try salt on watermelon just once, and if I didn’t like it, he’d get in a kayak and paddle out to the island with me. Ray was much more comfortable piloting the pontoon boat into town for ice cream, than floating in a small piece of plastic, so this was a big deal. I bravely shook salt onto my watermelon at dinner one night, settled once and for all in my mind that it was terrible, and we all had a good laugh. Occasionally I would remind Ray that his half of the bargain was still outstanding. It became a running joke.
On a crisp late August morning in 1999, I was packing up to leave my home at Camp before moving back to the west coast. It was very bittersweet, as I had loved and been so challenged and privileged to experience 16 months of full-time camp life, and being family with Ray and Sandy. After breakfast on that last sad morning, Ray looked me in the eye and said, “Let’s go kayaking.” I tried to let him off the hook, but he was adamant. He wanted to keep his word. And so we went down to the waterfront and, with the waterfront director on standby “just in case,” we paddled out to the island and back.
Ray often used to start a story with “Good leaders always…” Well, that day I learned, “Good leaders always follow through, good leaders keep their commitments, good leaders do what they say they’re going to do.”
Whether it was paddling to the island, walking from Magnetawan to Niagara Falls to raise money for the camp, persevering through ministry challenges, or not giving up on a camper or staff who was struggling, Ray always followed through, he always kept his commitments, and he always did what he said he would do. Many lives are better for having experienced Ray's leadership. Mine is just one of them.

My memory of Ray is that he baptized me in the Jordan River. I didn’t know Ray very well but it became very obvious on our trip to Israel that he was a very godly man who loved God passionately. I counted it a privilege to be on this amazing trip with Ray and Sandy. I’m not sure if I truly thanked him for his part in my baptism. I want to make a point of thanking him when I see him in heaven one day.

Dear Sandy, Lori, Kathie and Debbie. We first met Your family at Timber Bay Children’s Home in the late 60’s, where we worked together. A few years later when your family returned to Fort Erie (Stevensville), Ray called Ken to come work with him and get his electrical license, then we became neighbors!!! So many wonderful memories of our brief years together on House Rd. Especially the Blizzard of ‘77!!!! Years later when Ray and Sandy moved to Camp Kahquah our young adult children were privileged to work with you. Ray especially had a huge impact on our son. We are forever grateful for all of Ray’s ministries. Then …..about 7 years ago Ray invited us to meet them at Camp for the men to work on a project. What a fun time we had!! Ray is forever in our hearts. Love and hugs to you all. Praying for you during this difficult time.

Dearest Sandy, Lorena, Kathy, Debbie and extended family. Our heartfelt condolences on the passing of Ray. My memories of Ray go back to when we attended MPCC and your family would occasionally visit on a Sunday when you were down from Timber Bay Children’s Home. Then when you transitioned back to Saskatoon and made MPCC your home church until Ray and you took over the church plant for University Heights. Our paths have often crossed over the years and we appreciated hearing of Ray’s ministry involvements and how he was serving the Lord in some capacity.
Ray had a very warm and engaging personality, loved people and loved to share about Jesus. Ray was a very attentive and loving grandfather and I remember Ray spending many hours and doing life with Kathy’s boys who were close by. Ray also knew the value of money ... I remember seeing him pick up a discarded pop can outside the church, crushing it with his foot and said “there’s another dime” as he put it in a bag of crushed cans in his car. I loved seeing you both out riding your on your motorbikes. Your loss is heaven’s gain and I can only imagine what Ray has witnessed as he met his Saviour face to face.
Unfortunately Menno and I will be away and unable to attend Ray’s celebration of life. We extend our love and are uplifting you and your family in prayer over these grieving days Sandy. May beautiful memories bring comfort to your heart and even a smile through the tears and sense of loss. What a glorious day that will be when you are both reunited in the presence of our Lord as you walk the streets of gold that Ray is now enjoying.
With Love and Deepest Sympathy,
Menno and Lynn Janzen

I met Ray and Sandy while growing up in the church at Massey Place Community. Rae and Sandy welcomed us into their home as they often led Bible studies, or acted as leaders and offered mentorship for families and youth. I fondly remember Ray always put his hand on my shoulder as we talked. He would lean in and intently listen as I shared. He was always quick to offer a word of encouragement or simply say a prayer. He was so kind, wise and always supportive. There was never any question of how much he loved the Lord and wanted to share his passion with others. Rae and I met for coffee at Tim’s a few times and I enjoyed those visits very much. My heartfelt sympathies to Sandy and family. What comes with a great love is a great loss. May you find joy and comfort in the memories you shared.

They were great supporters and a constant encouragement to myself and our family even after they left. I will greatly miss him. My deepest condolences to Sandy and the family.

My father, Irven Winger, and Raymond’s mother, Annie Sider were brothers and sisters; Raymond and I were first cousins. Our grandmother had seven children and twenty-six grandchildren. We did not often meet at my grandmother’s house but when we did, the cousins had a lot of fun. Raymond was five years older than me and I looked up to him and respected him. He was also a good orator and it was fun to be around him and listen to him talk.
My grandmother lived in Wainfleet and we lived in Buffalo. Raymond’s folks had a farm outside of Stevensville, Ontario and we often stopped in to see them on our way home. It appeared to me, as a Sunday visitor, that the six kids had the time of their lives living on the farm. They lived in a big farmhouse with an upright piano in the front parlor. The older kids taught me how to hang onto the tail of a cow and go for a wild ride around the field. The family had a prewar car and we’d all push it to get it started; the younger kids would ride in the vehicle; Donald drove and the older boys hopped onto the running boards as we rode around the yard. We’d pick strawberries along the road and top them with cream from the dairy cows.
It is fun to remember the olden days but difficult to accept the passing of the kids that used to play together. I am sure Raymond is in a happier place visiting with the Saints who have gone before him. But, I would have liked to have talked to him and run around the fields together, just one more time.
My condolences to Sandy, his children, and everyone who will miss him. Until we again, at Jesus’ feet, God be with us.
