Dear Janine and family,
I was completely heartbroken at the news of Andrew's recent passing. I offer my sincere condolences. I had the privilege and joy of serving with Andrew in the Office of the JAG for many years. From day one, I was impressed by his intellect, professionalism and pragmatism. More than this, I was blown away by the man he was. We always looked to Andrew to lift our spirits and he always answered the call. Best of all, he often regaled us with stories of his amazing family, especially as the kids grew into adulthood and joined the CAF. Andrew was always the consummate officer, lawyer, friend and family man. After I became the JAG, I often sought Andrew's insights and advice. I knew he would provide a sensible and balanced perspective. I relied on Andrew's leadership and keen mentoring abilities to help lead the the newer generations of JAG officers. The entire office was devastated by his diagnosis but we knew if anyone could put up a heroic battle it was Andrew...and he did. We were sad to see him leave the CAF and the OJAG but we knew he was destined for great things in new career. He defied the odds and continued to live life to its fullest. He constantly proved to be an inspiration and an example for all even though he was dealing with overwhelming health challenges. I suspect the whole family is dealing with some tough sad dark days. However, I know too that you have so many many great memories of Andrew to brighten any such dark day. His spirit and grace will live on in all of us. He was truly loved and respected by all in the OJAG. I will have unending gratitude for Andrew, and the entire family, for their service and many sacrifices for the OJAG, the CAF and Canada. Saluti my dear friend. Fiat Justitia. Major-General (retired) Blaise Cathcart,KC

Having shared most of my military legal career with Andrew and corresponding with him after we retired, it was -from the beginning-immediately and consistently evident throughout his life that Andrew was special. Although he was an exceptional lawyer, who always showed integrity and moral courage by taking the hard right decisions over the easy wrong ones - it was his zeal for every aspect of life that made him instantly stand out. He was excited about life and everything it involved – long before his first diagnosis in GK. This love and passion continued throughout his entire life. It inspired all of us and we were drawn to Andrew and his office- he was fun to be around, and he made all of us happier and better. Any topic with Andrew would display an insight or ignite humour or enthusiasm. The Leafs, restaurants, food and cooking, travel and travel tips were our most shared and constant themes. However, the one dominant point of engagement- and the one in which his enthusiasm, passion, pride and love was most profound and obvious- was his family. I loved getting updates about every single family member- you are all incredible. He was so proud of each one of you and quite honestly why not – you are a unique and special family of rare accomplishments. There is no doubt based on my exchanges with Andrew you were his source of greatest joy and strength. I hope, in time, you can take some small comfort in the knowledge that Andrew was loved and admired by those in JAG who worked with him. His memory will be kept alive by those of us who were so touched and inspired by Andrew and he will be fondly remembered with each glass of vino rosso I hold, plate of pasta I eat or each lead blown by the Leafs that I watch on TV. Dear Janine and family,
I thank God for the brief times I got to spend in Andrew's presence. In his office at the Kaserne in Geilenkirchen, as Pastor Stan said during the service, Andrew would always allow us to drop in and chat for a bit. We tended to laugh together at some of the more ridiculous military realities of the day, administrative or operational. I always left with a smile on my face. Had to because of Andrew's grin; that grin was crazy contagious. I loved the banter in our social situations too. Andrew, in my view, was gifted with what I will call "a happy voice," one whose raspy memory will always bring a smile to my face. I am truly grateful for him, his example and the many goods (as I saw things) that he stood so firmly for.
Janine, may you and everyone in the Appolloni clan be consoled as needed and blessed abundantly each day as you move forward.
May God rest Andrew's dear soul,
Peace of Christ,
Dave

Janine and family - Andrew was a person who will always be in a category of his own, in my estimation. Both my wife Stacy and I knew him, Stacy at law school and myself through the military. As I read the other tributes to him, I noticed a similarity to our own experiences with Andrew: that he possessed a goodness that made every encounter, even when they came years apart, feel like no time at all had passed. He filled up a room not only with his presence, but his warmth toward others. When I was posted at Cold Lake, he and Janine shared with me their funny stories of their time there together, and I never passed the Dakota aircraft without thinking of the two of them, at the beginning of a wonderful life together. Andrew personified what it means to love life, and how to live one's life well, even in the face of great adversity. His kindness, optimism, and genuine interest in making what his life touched a bit better, are qualities that shone in him. I am so very sad to say goodbye to Andrew, but so grateful for having had the opportunity to share a bit of his wonderful life's journey.

I am struggling to send a message in which I speak of Andrew in the past tense. It just does not make sense to me. But here it goes.
The Carignan-Jackson family extend our sympathy to you all as you transition into this new phase of life. We feel so fortunate that Andrew and the Appolloni family arrived into our lives during the last year of our posting in Germany. It started as many friendships do in adulthood with first our sons Dom and Andrew becoming great friends. And Dom came with the best parents and lovely brothers/sisters. We would joke with Janine that we cannot become friends as we were leaving and she was staying for another couple of years. But it was just impossible not to be friends with the Appollonis if given the chance.
One of my favourite memories of Andrew is not profound but centers around gelato. Not coming from an Italien background, we did not appreciate gelato. Andrew educated us on the wonder of gelato at a little gelato shop in Waldenrath and as a result we became lifelong fans. To this day whenever I treat myself to a gelato, I think of Andrew.
One thing we will always be grateful for as well was the care Andrew provided to our own Andrew. He served as a wonderful role model that complemented Sly's father figure style. I think it is important that our young men get a variety of perspectives while growing up. Really there are no words or gifts that can measure up to this show of kindness from Andrew to our family.
I am so grateful that I did get a chance to see Andrew and Janine while I was on tasking in Saskatoon to support the Reginal General Hospital in Nov of 2021. They drove all the way into town to take me out to dinner. It was coming upon Xmas season and I was a little homesick being away from home. Not for that evening. Despite a gap where we had not seen each other for far too long we immediately fell into an easy rapport that is so common amongst military friends that are like family. Again they gave me their gift of kindness and friendship.
Thinking of you all during this time.

I am so saddened by the news of Andrew's passing. Andrew and I served together on the UN mission in the Golan heights in 1996/1997 where we became very close. We shared incredible memories, learning about the conflict, the culture and history of the region. Andrew and I were diving partners in our getaway to Eilat on the Red Sea. I was always struck by his genuine curiosity and good nature with those around him. I so enjoyed the few occasions, much later in life, where we were able to reconnect and share "peace" stories with a few of our "Golan buddies". It was such a treat to come together with people you had been so close to and remind each other of so much of what we'd forgotten. Good fortune put us together again when work took Andrew to New Zealand. On the off chance that he might know the only Canadian exchange officer in New Zealand Andrew was able to respond with a resounding "yes". Andrew's brief visit to our home that night for dinner, a trip to the local pub and afterparty at "Heineken Phil's" will forever be one of my best memories. Andy was a very special person and I am sorry that I will no longer have a chance to share in his wonderful company. I can only imagine how much he will be missed. It was an honour to have soldiered with him.

Dear Anthony, Jeremy, Dominic, Elliot, Nina & Janine,
We send our love.
Chris & I have had the privilege of knowing your parents since the mid '80's. We knew first hand that Andrew was a very special human being.
We met on a Friday afternoon at the Mess in Winnipeg & almost immediately he offered Janine's name & their phone number so the four of us could get together. I can still picture sitting across the table from Andrew's shining eyes & huge smile, as he wrote down the phone number on a napkin...pre-cell-phone-years! Though we have not shared a posting since Winnipeg we have always kept that kindness & friendship in our hearts.
On a lighter note, I remember that Andrew & Janine owned the very first Subaru that I'd ever seen. At the time we were amazed at the cost of the replacement exhaust system, it seem a crazy amount in 1984. Now I realize that as with every other act in his life, Andrew had bought the right car to keep his beloved family safe. He loved you all that much.
Despite the lack of frequent, in person visits, we will miss Andew, deeply. We loved spending time with your parents.
When we were with them we had such happy fun, they were such a good match.
Luckily for us Andrew lives on in our memories. We are so sad that we did not get to Saskatchewan for a real visit while you all were growing up..."life is short, act quickly" is something we all know but often fail to act on. We did share a spontaneous visit & a meal, that Andrew seemed to pull out of thin air, at some point in the last 40 years, when we were passing through Winnipeg. As always the hospitality was terrific! We marvelled at what great kids you all were. And I remember when Nina was born, I feel that Janine & I got to enjoy a short visit, perhaps in the base airport. Nina, your arrival brought much needed "pinkness" to your mom's life! As the mom to first two boys & then one girl, I understand that feeling.
We send our thoughts & prayers to you all, grateful to have shared in Andrew's life & shedding sad tears for your loss & ours as well.
Long distance hugs,
Joanne & Christopher Daley

Andrew - a Renaissance man, a family man, an exceptional man.
A kind man, a one-of-a-kind man; a lover of food (particularly Italian); of wine (Umbrian and more); of cooking (gourmet cuisine, home-made, no efforts spared.)
Not just any man, but a just man; a clear-thinking man, a sensitive, thoughtful man; a finely tuned, well-balanced legal adviser within the JAG family. A defender-of-the-truth, inquisitive and interested in every direction and to all depths .
A fun-in-the eye man with song, laughter, puns and clever repartees, The best of friends one could ever wish for.
And in the end, a most courageous soldier of his fate.
REST IN PEACE, Andrew. AUF WIEDERSEHEN.

Andrew was a dear friend … someone whom I will miss for the rest of my life.
He was a devoted father and husband. There are no words to describe the emptiness with which Janine, Anthony, Jeremy, Dom, Elliot and Nina must now contend. My heart goes out to each of them, but with some solace that there will be (are) literally hundreds of arms reaching out…
Andrew and I became colleagues during the summer of 1990. I had only known about him through his esteemed reputation. Needless to say, he lived up to those promises. He was a man of conviction, integrity, great intellect and - most of all - had a joie de vivre that was best reflected in his dedication to his family and friends. You could not help but fall in love with him. We became friends. We shared only one more posting in Europe, but it was always comforting to know that he was there somewhere … a friend in time of need.
We all have different beliefs about what happens to our non-corporeal existence “afterwards”. But I have no doubt that Andrew’s indefatigable spirit lives in each of us. He is looking upon us now - smiling as only he can - knowing that we have our bridges to cross … and he will be there waiting with open arms (and the warmest of hugs).

Andrew was truly a great person who I am honored to have had the privilege to have met and that I can call a friend. We met in Montreal on-route to the Golan Heights where we first served together. It was there that I came to truly appreciate Andrew as a fine officer, comrade in arms, and as a friend who had a zest for life, adventure, and good food and wine. More than that he had a strong sense of duty and devotion to family and friends. Its of no surprise that he married a truly wonderful lady, Janine, and took such pride in his four sons and daughter. He was a true officer and gentleman in all aspects of his life.
We carried our friendship onward and was always a pleasure that we could pick-up where we left off like it was yesterday and I always treasured the conversations whether it was about family, politics, world affairs, or just about cooking and the merits of a fine wine or whiskey. He was opinionated and strong willed but a humble man with the ability to truly listen and weigh other people's thoughts. That is a rare trait which Andrew had in spades.
A memory that I will always treasure is standing on the Golan Officer's Mess deck with Andrew barbecuing steaks and cooking for Friday Happy Hour while listening to Gordon Lightfoot's Canadian Railway Trilogy...thank-you my friend. I have many more and for that I am grateful and consider myself lucky and a better person for have known Andrew.

I am proud to have called Andrew one of my best friends.
We first met in 1987 when we both served together on the United Nations Disengagement Observer Force on the Golan Heights, between Israel and Syria. We were part of a very tight knit group of officers who worked hard, but took the time to visit Israel, Syria and Egypt in our free time. Andrew, Dwight and I spent many hours exploring Jerusalem, Damascus, Tel Aviv and all points in between, and meeting locals of all regions. Andrew had an incredible sense of curiosity and adventure and truly loved that mission.
Afterwards, Andrew and Janine were posted to Winnipeg where we reunited with Dwight to continue our legendary friendship where many fine meals were had and memories made. We continued our deep friendship until the last.
Andrew is probably the most impressive person I have ever met. He loved and supported his family, instilling values, a sense of humour and a work ethic which has served the children well. His sense of humour and fun were legendary. Whenever we would gather together, we knew it would be an incredible time with lots of laughs and great discussions. Andrew was incredibly fortunate to find and marry his true soulmate, Janine, a formidable woman who loved him unconditionally, and an exemplary mother. The kids are a testament to that uncommon love and parenting.
Andrew was also one of the best officers I have ever known. His work ethic, skills and leadership made him a standout in every setting he ever worked at. He was particularly superb with his subordinates, ensuring they were properly supported and guided in their tasks. He made great efforts to train them and improve their careers. Every person who has worked for him can attest he was their best leader.
A true Liberal to the end, he understood and valued the importance of politics in bettering the lives of all Canadians, having come to this land as an immigrant and loving Canada as only a person who chose it can understand. He did not take our bounties for granted, and served in the armed forces for the betterment of Canada and the world.
Andrew, your passing makes me feel like I have a hole in my heart. I am so incredibly sad and can’t believe this has happened. Your suffering is over, and now you can prepare a proper cup of espresso for the angels.

Andrew was a passionate advocate and had great faith in the people he assisted. I first met Andrew when he was doing duty counsel in Whitefish Lake First Nation. I introduced myself to him and he said with a smile "I'm Andrew the new gutless lawyer in Prince Albert". He didn't need a stomach, because he needed room for his big heart. The criminal bar will miss him greatly. My condolences to his family, who are blessed to carry his good name.

Condolences to all who mourn Andrew’s life. I never met Andrew or any of his family. I only know tidbits from what my sister Marianne Larose has told me about him. By all accounts he was a gem of a human being. This in my view counts for everything. He will be warmly received in his new eternal home. This is how God treats those that have lived a life such as Andrew lived.
May he rest in peace and all of the family be consoled and comforted by the love you have for each other.
Blessings,
Ray Gervais
