Obituary of Jocelan Ann Gabriel

On January 20th, 1957 in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Jocelan Ann Gabriel was born Louise Ann Paulhus to Clement and Alvina Paulhus. She was the fourth of their six children. The family moved to Rosthern, Saskatchewan where she spent her childhood and attended both primary and secondary school. After graduation from high school, Jocelan moved to Saskatoon where she worked in the service industry for several years before enrolling in the University of Saskatchewan, where she earned her degree in Social Work. Jocelan returned to work in the service industry upon completing university. She always enjoyed being around people, she loved people. To Jocelan, if you were her friend, you were family. If you needed help, she was there; if you needed someone to listen, she was there; if you needed a soft place to fall, she would provide that too. Jocelan’s love for her family ran deep. Her nieces and nephews were her pride and joy. She took great pleasure in preserving the innocence of Christmas for them by writing personalized letters to them from Santa. It gave her great joy to put a smile on their faces, and she did this for many years. As her friends were also her family, she would often bring one or two home to our parents for family gatherings or holidays; the more the merrier was her motto. Jocelan took responsibility very seriously, even as a young teenager. While other teenagers were enjoying their summer holidays, she gave up her summer to care for her younger siblings. More than once she put her life on hold to help where she was needed, and she did it with a smile. Jocelan met Klaus Heine in March, 1989. They began their journey in life together and Jocelan was thrilled to include Klaus and his family as her own and to be a part of theirs as well. In July of 2016, Jocelan learned she had breast cancer. Following surgery and a series of treatments through 2016 and 2017, it was believed she had won the battle. In late December of 2017, she was diagnosed with lung cancer. She was determined to beat this too, and she put up a hard fight, but on February 10th, 2018 at St. Paul’s Hospital Palliative care unit, the battle was lost. Leaving to mourn her passing is her Partner, Klaus Heine. Sister Marilyn Ambler and her family Tanda & Curtis Olson, Emmy, Josh and Calean. Sister Linda & Rich Birns and their family Tracy & Andy Gibson, Ashleigh, Wendy & Travis Dewey, Cole and Alexis, Amber Birns. Sister Rita & Peter Dykhuizen and their family, Colin & Kyla Dykhuizen, Sarah, Kaleb and Patrick. Melissa & Brent Zelensky, Madeline, Eli and Holland. Sister Jean Forgues and her family David and Reed. Klaus’s mother Ursula Heine, brother Ronald Heine, sister Martina & Vince Friesen. Aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. Jocelan was predeceased by her mother Alvina Paulhus nee Friesen, father Joseph Edmond Clement Paulhus, and brother Bill Paulhus; grandparents Fred and Alice Paulhus, Wilhelm and Helen Friesen, several aunts and uncles. Klaus’s father, Klaus Heine Sr.
