Dr. Paul Korol

 

November 2, 1934 - April 14, 2024

 

 

The family of Paul Korol is saddened to announce his passing on April 14^th, 2024 at The Hospice at Glengarda.

 

Paul was born on November 2, 1934, the youngest of five children, born to Anton and Ksenia Korol in Biggar, SK. As a child, Paul was raised on a farm, first in Lizard Lake and then Cory (just West of Saskatoon). At a young age, the family moved to Saskatoon. Paul attended high school at Bedford Road Collegiate. He spoke fondly of his school friends whom he stayed in contact with for many years. Post-secondary education was completed at the U of S; first obtaining a BA (Honours) then a Medical Degree. While Paul was attending University he painted barns, elevators and houses to pay for his education. He often reminisced about his kinship with co-workers and the opportunity to experience the various regions of the Prairies. Paul completed medical residency in Hawaii where his lifelong love of Hawaiian music began. Paul was always a Saskatchewan boy at heart and returned in 1961 to begin a practice as a Family Physician in Leroy, SK. Through hard work, long hours and a kind personality, Paul formed a friendship with his patients and community. He held the town of Leroy and surrounding area very close to his heart. The stories he told often centered around the wonderful people he met on his first medical journey. 

 

In 1967, Paul returned to the U of S to earn a specialty in Radiology. After a brief residency at the University Hospital, he joined Associated Radiologists as a partner. This would be his lifelong career where he provided guidance on many boards, both nationally and locally and acted as Chief of Radiology at City Hospital. Paul’s calling was helping people; he worked tirelessly travelling around Saskatchewan to provide care in centres that did not have access to a Radiologist. He took great pride in providing the best care possible for his patients. He always stated “it takes time and patience to get to the root of a problem. Ask questions, take time, then you will get the answer that you need to help someone”. Paul retired from practice in 1999 but would carry on to care for patients through locums in Saskatchewan for a number of years. 

 

Paul was a wealth of knowledge on many subjects. He was a ferocious reader and loved all genres of music. He had a memory that was incredible, even at the end of his life he shared stories of experiences from 75 years ago. Paul was the epitome of a true Gentle Man, always kind, always polite. He never wanted to cause an inconvenience to anyone. 

 

In 1981, Paul met the love of his life, Stella Orlowski. They were kindred spirits and shared many passions including mushroom and berry picking, cross-country skiing, travelling and polka parties or dances throughout Canada and the USA. Their favourite venue was soft stepping the polka at DanceLand in Manitou. They were two peas in a pod, always together until Stella’s passing in 2005. Paul and Stella demonstrated to their family and friends that loyalty, commitment and care for each other were paramount in a lasting, positive relationship. After Stella’s passing Paul reconnected with Marie Browarny. They had their first date in 1956 and their second in 2012. They formed a loving relationship where they shared laughter, tears and absolute respect for one another. 

 

Paul was predeceased by his parents and siblings: Michael (1987), Mary (1985), Lil (1996) and Andy (2021), as well as his wife Stella (2005) and sons-in-law, Zonnie Worobey (1989) and Terry Loraas (2022) and his great-granddaughter, Stella-Lily

(2022). 

 

Sons; Anthony and Stephen(Danielle), grandchildren; Nolan and Brynn; as well as Paul's second family, Stella’s daughters, Sandy(Dave) Metz, Loette(Terry) Woroniuk, Carol(Bob)Pelletier and Michelle Loraas, grandchildren; Brennen, Adrienne, Sasha, Rachelle, Danielle, Matthew, Colette and Stefanie, and great-grandchildren; Jayden, Ty, Addison, Grayson, Alex, Scarlette, Oyden, Espen and Ezekiel are left to carry on Paul’s legacy based on his mantra of “be patient, be honest, be loyal, and always remember family comes first”.

 

Paul will be missed more than words can express! Our family will strive to stay committed to being humble, kind and respectful -just as he would want. 

 

Our family would like to thank the staff at The Hospice at Glengarda for the wonderful care and unending compassion they showed, not only to Paul, but our entire family. We respectfully ask that any show of condolence be in way of a donation to either The Hospice at Glengarda c/o St. Paul’s Hospital Foundation or STARS Ambulance, Saskatoon Branch. A Celebration of Life will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, May 17^th, 2024 at The Willows Golf and Country Club.
