Nahid Ahmad

Obituary of Nahid Ahmad

It is with great sadness that the family of Nahid Ahmad announces her passing on November 13, 2018 after a lengthy period of illness at the age of 77. Nahid was born on July 5, 1941 in Bihar, India. She grew up in Pakistan and received her Master's degree in psychology. In 1965 she married her first husband, Shamim Ahmad, and moved to the United States. Following the birth of their daughter, Zeba, in 1966, the couple moved to Saskatoon. Shamim passed away in 1986 and Nahid married Dr. Marc Baltzan in 1992, with whom she spent many happy years until his passing in 2005. In addition to her over 30 years of practice as a psychologist at Royal University Hospital, Nahid will be fondly remembered as a founding member of the Pakistani and Islamic communities in Saskatoon. Her passion for improving the lives of others extended to the non-profit sector, serving as Chairperson on the Royal University Hospital Foundation from 1998-2001, and as President of the Immigrant Women of Saskatchewan (1987-1990). She took on a leadership role in helping refugee families from Kosovo settle here in Saskatoon. In 2002, Nahid received the Saskatchewan Order of Merit in recognition of her many social contributions to the province. Nahid was predeceased by her parents, Sakeena Khatoon and Muhammad Noor-ul-Hasan, as well as her siblings Ibnul Hasan, Zea Hasan and Ainul Hasan, and her two spouses Shamim Ahmad and Marc Baltzan. Nahid's memory will be lovingly cherished by her daughter Zeba, her two grandchildren Faraaz and Sakeena, her brother Abrar Hasan, her son-in-law Dr. Jawed Akhtar, as well as countless cousins, nieces, nephews, extended family and dear friends. Nahid was blessed with a number of dedicated caregivers over the course of her illness, and the family would like in particular to recognize Maasooma Khalil's compassion and support in her final years. The family also gives heartfelt thanks to the staff at Royal University Hospital for their incredible care and hospitality over Nahid's period of illness. Memorial donations in memory of Nahid can be made to: Nahid Baltzan Ahmad and Dr. Marc, Baltzan Endowment c/o Royal University Hospital Foundation, 103 Hospital Drive, Saskatoon, S7N 0W8, www.ruhf.org.
