Gerry Wenzel passed away peacefully on April 24, 2019 at St. Paul’s Hospital at the age of 89, with family by his side. He is survived by “his love and his life” Shirley, his three children: Kathy (Curt) Haugrud; David; and Lynda (Wes) Guenther; his grandkids: Kirstyn, Jeff, Rachelle (Aubrey), Sheri, Derek (Trona), Cody, Brendan, Terell, Angel, Meeca, Oyeala, Emma; and his beloved greatgrandchildren. He is also survived by his younger sister Florina, numerous nieces and nephews, and his Saskatoon Firefighter brothers.  Gerry was predeceased by his siblings Betty, Karl, Anna, Wes, Andy, Hilda, Henry and Rita.
Born in Bruno, SK, Gerry moved to Saskatoon as a young boy. He attended Princess Alexandra School and Saskatoon Technical Collegiate before starting a career with the Saskatoon Fire Department that spanned from 1951-1986. He rose through the ranks and retired as Acting Fire Chief. On July 25, 1953 Gerry married Shirley Lang.
Over the years, he contributed his time and energy to a number of community organizations and teams. He was blocking back with the Hilltops in 1949, wrestled at an international level, and was involved with the YMCA, coach and judge with the St. Mary’s, St. Joseph’s and Bethel Gym Clubs. He was also a member of the Sask. Aquarium Society, Hollandia and Internationals Soccer. He was a passionate gardener, curler, and golfer; being a curler at Nutana, Granite and CN Curling Clubs, and a member at Wildwood and Holiday Park golf courses.
Friends and family were Gerry’s ultimate passion and love. He lived for those fishing trips to Teds Lake and Piprell Lake. He loved camping and fishing with family, and golfing with the grandkids and friends. He was generous and always willing to give the shirt off his back to help a friend in need. You couldn’t go anywhere with Gerry without him stopping to talk to someone he knew. We will remember him as a man of integrity with a deep devotion to his family and friends. The family would like to extend a special thank you to the loving staff at St. Ann’s Senior Citizens’ Village. A Celebration of Gerry’s life will be held on Saturday April 27, 2019 at 4:00 p.m. at Saskatoon Funeral Home. Condolences may be left at www.saskatoonfuneralhome.com where a video recording of the funeral will be posted in the coming days for those who are not able to attend.
