We were saddened to say our final goodbye to Josephine Elizabeth Trew (nee Nelson), of Saskatoon, June 7, 2020. Jo was a daughter of the prairies, born the eldest of 8 children August 25, 1916 in Vanguard SK to pioneers Carl and Mary Jane Nelson. She was a keen student of life, following her mother’s lead as a teacher and passing the vocation to one son and three grandchildren. After attending rural schools, she went on to Normal School and taught at small rural schools in southwestern Saskatchewan.
Jo married Allan Trew of Lemsford in 1943 while Allan was on 48 hour leave from the RCAF. Doug was born in 1945 followed in turn by Dick, Mike, and Tim over the next 16 years. Jo supported Allan after his discharge from the service and they took up residence in Saskatoon, Regina and London Ontario while Allan finished his training. They returned to Saskatoon in 1962 where she pursued her dream of a Bachelor of Education [1969] and then worked in income tax preparation well into her 80s. In the meantime, she was a quiet but powerful force in raising her boys, providing endless meals and hospitality to family and friends as well as an active member in many community and church groups. She accompanied Allan on camping and fishing trips which were opportunities to share many a smile. Life after Allan’s passing in 2001 involved new challenges and courage. Much to her pleasure, she was able to welcome more grandchildren and great grandchildren into the family. We especially appreciate the support of the community at Luther Riverside Terrace and the staffs at Royal University Hospital, Saskatoon City Hospital and Sherbrooke Community Centre.
Jo is survived by Doug (Pauline), Dick (Carol), Michael (Dianne), and Tim (Tammy), fourteen grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her siblings Gary Nelson (Karen) and Sandra Kaytor (Don) She was predeceased by her parents, husband Allan, brothers Carl Nelson (Marjorie), John Nelson (infant), Jack Nelson [Janie] and sisters Lottie Nebel (Jack), and Jean Trew (John). In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the LutherCare Foundation or a charity of one's choice. Josephine’s service will be livestreamed on Thursday, June 11 at 2:00 p.m.
