Juana Graciela Astargo-Cuevas
June 24, 1943 – January 13, 2021

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved mother, grandmother, great grandmother and friend Juana Graciela Astargo-Cuevas. Juana was born on June 24th, 1943 in Rinconada, Los Andes, Chile to Catalina and Manual Astargo. In September 1975, she moved her family to Saskatoon, Saskatchewan to protect them from the political unrest in Chile. Juana was proud to work for the Greater Saskatoon Catholic Schools as a custodian, and until March of 2020 worked full time. She refused to retire as she felt the need to be around others. She loved cooking traditional Chilean food and enjoyed teaching her children and grandchildren to cook. She was famous for her empanadas and hot sauce that were enjoyed my many. She made the best bread and it was always a treat to arrive at her home to the fresh smell of bread baking. She loved her garden and her flowers. Each year she would plant a huge garden to be enjoyed by her family. She was an active member of the St. Mary’s Spanish Parish, where she would meet with friends, sing, and volunteer her time. Everything she did was for her family and loved spending time with her great grandchildren Araya and Logan and her grandchildren, Kaylee, Sheldon, Marcelo, Andre, Kiyanna, Celia, Naleya and Myah. Her best friend was Holly her little dog, they found each other and were inseparable. Juana leaves behind her son Beno Arevalo (Cheryl) and daughter Paola Kobussen (Jemal) her grandchildren, great grandchildren, and many family relatives in Chile. She was predeceased by her daughter Julia Arevalo-Boyachek and her spouse Julio Arevalo. We want to extend a special thank you to the staff at RUH neurology department for all the support and care she was provided. A private Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Wednesday, January 20, 2021 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Mary’s Parish. Friends and extended family are invited to watch the livestream of the Funeral Mass at that time by clicking on the link at the top of Juana’s tribute page.  A video recording will also be posted to the site later that day.
