Velma passed away peacefully at the age of 102 years in Saskatoon with her children at her side Jan 31, 2021. She was predeceased by her loving husband of 61 years Les Roberts and siblings Harold Morris, Irene Wright and Melvin Morris. She is loved by her children, son Gord (Marg) Roberts, daughter Ellen (John) Armstrong, grandchildren Kevin (Gillian) Roberts (great grandchildren, Parker and Zoey Roberts), Brent Roberts, Joel (Kiko) Armstrong, and Jonelle Armstrong. Velma was born in Kerrobert hospital October 10, 1918.

She grew up on the family farm north of Dodsland, and worked a short time in the Kerrobert area before moving to Saskatoon. She loved outdoor farm work and gladly worked in a hardware store in Saskatoon during WWII. After the war she met Les Roberts while they were both working at the Unemployment Insurance Office in Saskatoon.  Since family members could not both work at that office she voluntarily stayed home. She was soon a devoted mother to Gord and Ellen, and only when they grew up did she re-enter the workforce. She worked part time twenty years at R.G. Wright’s where she became a valued employee. The YWCA 60+ Fitness club also kept her and Les active for over 20 years. Les and Velma always enjoyed camping, starting in Saskatchewan and driving all the way to visit Newfoundland and Ontario relatives at least twice.

After their children married, they started bus tours and flying to destinations throughout North America, including Hawaii as well as a cruise to Alaska. Velma was always there for her friends and family with lots of love and never a harsh word. She was always encouraging and assisting (even to trowel cement, shingle or paint) with extended family. At age 92, after Les passed away, Velma flew to Ontario to visit her brother and made trips with her children to Alberta, B.C. and various Saskatchewan locations. She was known for keeping busy with crafts, not napping, and hosting Christmas till age 92!  We thank Preston Park I residence staff for her 10 good years with them. Extended family and friends gathered for her 98th and 100th birthdays to celebrate her life. Velma was active, mobile, and caring her entire life, and at the end she was looking forward to being home with those who predeceased her. Always loving and loved, she will continue in our memories.

Velma supported the work of the Gideons who distribute Bibles, so memorial donations may be made in lieu of flowers to The Gideons, at Gideons.ca. There will be a private family service at 1:00 pm Saturday, February 6, 2021. The service will be livestreamed and can be viewed at www.saskatoonfuneralhome.com.

VELMA ROBERTS
On the occasion of entering heaven
January 31st, 2021

                                  Velma, Mother, Grandmother, Friend
Ever ready to lend all a hand
Love and kindness you always extended
Making all our lives feel so blessed
                                  Always having our needs addressed

Recalling your virtues is such a delight
Offering your love to all, day and night,
                                  Better example we cannot find
                                  Enduring memories flood our mind
Released into heaven is worth celebration!
Treasured by God, as His loving creation
So worthy of all of our appreciation!

Love & Appreciation for your life of caring love,
John & Ellen
