Betty Sadoway

November 1, 1951 - August 31, 2023

I guess this is it for me then…

I’ve had what one dear friend would call an ordinary, extraordinary life and I’m grateful for it. I’m grateful for a lot of things, mostly people.

I’m grateful for my “hilariousing” (ask Maida) husband Ted Stensrud, who has been the love of my life for over 30 years and given me a lifetime’s worth of laughs. I told the grandkids - you need to marry someone you can accept as is, and who can make you laugh, ‘cause when all else goes, at least you’ll have a good chuckle.

I’m grateful for my daughter Zenovia, who taught me more about love and loving than anyone else possibly could and who gave me five of the dearest grandchildren in the world: Maria, (Caster), Adriana, Amalia, (Dagon), Milo and Isaac, all really good people.

I am grateful for my family of origin too. A Mom, Marie Sadoway, who is probably still humming; who gave me an intense desire to create and to tell the truth. A Dad, Zenon Sadoway, predeceased but whistling somewhere; who instilled in me the importance of education, and hard work. He also gave me a bigger gift indirectly: sobriety.

I am grateful for an incredible array of talented and incomparable sisters, sister-in-law, brothers and brothers-in-law, Geri Sadoway, (Peter Steven); Sue Sadoway, (Fred McFadzen); Judy Sadoway, (Murray Luck, deceased); Zenon Sadoway; Paulette Sadoway; Kathy Sadoway, (Geoff D’Eon); Mary Sadoway; Tricia Sadoway; John Sadoway, (Margaret Keast); and Nicola DiNicola. They, in turn, have added to our 40 million population in Canada with nephews and nieces -  Matthew Luck, (Anna Shave); Steven Sadoway; Emma D’Eon; Alice D’Eon, (Pam Nichol); Maida DiNicola and Gabriella DiNicola. And of course now we are into the next generation with grandniece Simone Luck.

I’m grateful for my Stensrud Family, who have finally accepted my hugging: Madeline Stensrud and Bob Stensrud (deceased); Patrice and Dave Blackwell, nephews Travis, (Julie); Garret, (Candice); and Bryan, (Linda) and grandnieces and nephews - Bethany, Donovan, Mercedez and Logan. Jim Stensrud, niece Amy Stensrud, (Mike) grandnephews, Mason, Adam and Holden; and nephew Ryan Stensrud, (Devon).

I have a huge extended family as well - of Sadoways and Dolinskis, whose progeny are mostly located in Alberta. They are too numerous to mention but I’m grateful I was able to meet so many of them when I was 17.

I’m grateful for special friends, Myrna Schellenberg and Elke Churchman. Special neighbours, The Yakimoski’s; and the Smiths. Special nurses at RUH - Doreen, Marissa and Holly.

I’m grateful for my AA Family, so many people who taught me how to live a life I couldn’t have dreamt of.

I’m grateful for my dream job at the Saskatoon Public Library and all the wonderful friends I had there.

I’m grateful for my little dream house on Main Street that I shared with Ted and Zenon. I’m grateful for the dream garden Ted and I created there together.

But mostly, I’m grateful to have learned how to be a part of it all in this world, how to give back and how to truly love people, including myself.

I love you all, to the moon and back. Look for signs of me. I’ll be around.

~Betty~
