Obituary of Matilda Marie McGill

It is with deep sadness we mourn the passing of our mother Matilda/Tillie McGill on Nov 12, 2023, at St. Paul’s hospital in Saskatoon. Matilda is survived by her four children, Robert (Pam), Sandra, Jeff (Joann), Nancy (Doug) and sisters Marlene and Helen. Fifteen grandchildren and twenty-one great grandchildren. Matilda was predeceased by her husband, Jack McGill, brother Al Massine, son Jim McGill (Marion) and daughter Judy Cenaiko. As well as son in laws, Ken Kreutzwieser, Eli Cenaiko and Cliff Busler.

Matilda Marie Ziegler was born on the family farm June 19, 1930, near Dilke, SK. Matilda would often reminisce about her early years on the farm. Describing a self-sufficient homestead with and orchard of plums and apples to the east of their farmhouse and a large garden to the south.

As a small child Matilda cherished her grandmother’s balalaika, which she was often allowed to play. As a youth, when harvest was at hand, Matilda would drive the farm truck, working side by side with her uncles to bring in the seasons crop. The Dilke switchboard where her aunt worked was another opportunity to help out. Matilda would often fill in so her aunt could run errands. In her late teens, Matilda worked at the Dominion Glass Plant in Red Cliff, Alberta. On weekends everyone would congregate at the Cameo Hall & Night Club. This is where she met the love of her Life Jack McGill.

Tilly spent many years helping the family business with her husband Jack. Mom enjoyed her time at the casino, trips to Las Vegas and many summers at Greig Lake.

Give your Mother a hug, give your Father a hug. We may forget the sacrifices our parents made for us and what wonderful memories we had together.

We would like to thank Homecare and the doctors and nurses in Palliative care at St. Paul’s hospital. No funeral will be held.
