Sonia Lubchenko

Obituary of Sonia Elvena Lubchenko

 May 2, 1935 – January 12, 2024

Sonia left her failing body on her terms and gently passed away holding hands with family. Left to mourn are son Kerry (Elaine), granddaughters Alesi (Kales) and Keara, special friend Michael, brother Mike, sister Myrtle (Peter), numerous nieces and nephews, and a large circle of longtime friends. She was predeceased by her husband Elisha, son Wade, parents Wasyl and Zena, sisters Mary (John) and Anne (Doug), and brothers John (Gladys) and Albert (Mildred).

Hardworking yet easygoing, Sonia always said what she meant. She pronounced every “v” as a “w” and would never answer “Yes” when called upon, instead replying with a resounding “Ho!” She kept an immaculate home and a garden that was always a favorite of bees and songbirds. She was a bowler, golfer and enjoyed fishing, hunting, and family camping trips.

Unable to sit still, if Sonia wasn’t cooking, baking or making preserves, she was visiting with friends, knitting, sewing, or embroidering while watching her soaps, curling, or baseball. She loved playing cards, solving puzzles, and reading western romances. She liked to dance, listen to country music, and always had time to share a moment, recipe or a smile with you. We never heard her say the word hate, but things “I do not care for” included chocolate, answering machines, and anyone lacking integrity.

She was sharp and humble and had a patient, compassionate and kind soul that we will forever miss.

At her request, there will be no funeral.  Thank you to all the EMS and RUH staff for providing her with exceptional comfort and care.
