Obituary of David Hawley

David Hawley July 1, 1943 – March 4, 2017. Dave Hawley, age 73, passed away peacefully at his home on March 4, after a courageous battle with cancer. Dave is predeceased by his father, Gerry. He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Janice; son Scott (Kathleen); his daughter Susan (Glen); mother Mary; brother Gerry (Marg); grandchildren Terrell, Sierra, Zachary, Andrew, and Lucas; nephews Michael (Kim), Robert (Deanna), and Ian (Jessica), as well as great nieces and nephews. Dave attended Saskatoon teachers college, and later obtained a master’s degree from the University of Saskatchewan and a Ph.D. from the University of Oregon. Dave had a profound influence on education throughout the province during his distinguished career, beginning as a teacher, principal, and Director of Education in Kindersley before moving to Saskatoon where he worked as the Regional Director of Education for the Saskatoon Region, then as a superintendent and Deputy Director of Education for the Saskatoon Public School board. Upon his superannuation, he finished his career on campus with the Saskatchewan Educational Leadership Unit. Dave’s love of basketball, fishing, and lake life have been passed down through his children and grandchildren. He loved his family and was passionately involved in his children’s basketball experiences, from organizing trips to the United States, to creating teams and leagues, and providing endless support throughout their careers. His love for fishing and lake life provided countless memories and experiences for his family, and will continue to be an important part of his legacy as his children and grandchildren create memories of which he would be proud. In his retirement, his life was enriched by the time he and Janice spent in Arizona with the many friends they had there. His days were spent organizing countless activities, trips, and parties. He enjoyed an active lifestyle playing golf, tennis, and working in the woodshop in Mesa. He touched many lives as a teacher, mentor, coach, colleague, father, grandfather, and friend. He will be remembered fondly by his family and friends. The family would like to thank Dr. Haver, Dr. Iqbal, Dr. Johnson, Dr. Walker, the nurses at the palliative care unit at St. Paul’s Hospital and the staff at the Saskatoon Cancer Center, as well as those at Saskatoon Home Care for providing care and support throughout his illness. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Dave’s memory to the Saskatoon Cancer Center or to Prostate Cancer Canada. .
