Obituary of Shirley Newby

Shirley Mae Newby (nee Murray) October 8, 1923 - March 15, 2017 Shirley passed peacefully 15 March 2017 at Oliver Lodge, Saskatoon. Shirley was born October 8, 1923 in Colonsay, Sask to Joseph and Mabel Murray. She spent her young years enjoying going to the dances in surrounding towns, playing hockey and helping her mom at the town’s telephone office. She moved to Saskatoon and attended City Hospital Nursing, graduating as a Registered Nurse in 1945. Upon her marriage to Ron in 1947, they were blessed with three children. Shirley’s involvement in church and school activities kept her very busy. She volunteered extensively in the community in various capacities from canvassing, delivering Meals on Wheels and visiting shut-ins, helping with bazaars, bake sales and childcare at the church. Her life was one of caring for all and sharing with many. Shirley loved to spend time with her family and especially her five grandchildren and six great grandchildren. She was proud to have learned how to use a computer in recent years and that enabled her to connect with her family that lived in other parts of the world. Watching figure skating, curling and golf were of interest to her during the cold winter months. She loved to keep informed of current affairs, pop culture, listened to music and was an avid reader. Shirley is survived by her three children Gaile, Craig (Lindy), and Cheryl (Marcel); five grandchildren, Kurt, Darcy (Rebecca), Clay(Nancy), Jan (Trevor), Stacey (Adam); and six great grandchildren, Eric, Liam and Quinn, Ivy, Mae and James; as well as her brother-in-law Gordon, niece and nephew (Lynne and Jack) and their families. Shirley was predeceased by her parents Joseph and Mabel, husband Ronald, granddaughter Colette, and sister-in-law Mildred. In lieu of flowers charitable donations are welcomed to Cosmopolitan Industries, Saskatoon and/or Neo-Natal Intensive Care Unit, Royal University Hospital Saskatoon.
