Obituary of Ella Hoffer

Ella Caroline Hoffer (nee Krieck) was born in Lemberg SK on Aug. 1, 1914 and passed away on Monday, May 8, 2017 at St. Paul's Hospital, at the age of 102 years, 9 months. She attended school in Lemberg, Melville and Laird until she left school to help raise her younger siblings. She was gainfully employed as a cook, baker, farmhand and babysitter before she married "Johnny" in October 1933. She then started the biggest and never-ending challenge of her life - raising 7 children.. During her years on the farm (without power, running water or indoor plumbing), she spent her days milking cows, raising chickens, ducks and turkeys, all while cooking and baking using a wood stove, as well as helping "Daddy" in the fields. Fall was extra busy with butchering, canning, and feeding all that helped with harvest. After they moved to Saskatoon in 1959 she worked at the Exhibition, cleaning offices and banquet rooms, while enjoying her growing family. Every house she lived in, Mom made a warm and inviting home, no matter the size of the house or the number of people in it. She enjoyed her vegetable and flower gardens, which were admired by many. Her sewing, knitting, crochet and craftwork projects were treasured by all. She loved her cats and dogs, and relaxed by playing the organ, cross-country skiing, biking, and camping at Minowukaw with Daddy and many of her family. Everyone was welcome at her door, there was always room at the table for unexpected guests, and the food was plentiful and delicious. After Dad died, she lived in various care homes and enjoyed all of the offered activities, as well as frequent family outtings. Mom will be remembered for her mischievous smile, her sharp sense of humour and her willingness to join in on the fun. Mom, you will always be our sunshine. Left to cherish memories of Mom are her brother Ken Krieck of Kitchener, sister-in-law Gwen Krieck of Surrey, children Marlien Morrell, Ramon (Nelda), Shelby (Don) Gwozdz, Richard (Annalee), Wendy (Michael) Cebryk, Bonnie Moser, 18 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by John, her husband of almost 70 years, daughter Donna Drummond, sons-in-law Jack Morrell, Jack Drummond and Don Moser, her father Alfred, birth-mother Phillipina, second mother Agnes, 6 siblings and spouses. The family would like to thank the staff at Circle Drive Special Care Home and St. Paul's Hospital Emerg and Ward 5B for their compassionate care. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of your choice.
