Stella Matheson

Obituary of Stella Matheson

It is with profound sadness that the family of Stephanie (Stella) Matheson announces her peaceful passing on Thursday, May 23, 2017. Stella was born to John and Sophie Moroz in the Hyas District, Saskatchewan on September 3, 1930. While working as a health care aide, she met a handsome young mountie named Neil Matheson whom she later married on November 22, 1954. Neil and Stella were stationed in various RCMP detachments across Saskatchewan where they met many wonderful friends and generously contributed to building stronger communities. A proud moment for our family was when Stella was honoured with the RCMP 2nd Man award by the Lieutenant Governor of Saskatchewan in recognition of the countless hours she contributed to running the detachment while Neil was on patrol. Stella personified the prairie spirit of hard work, generosity, and perseverance through her life as an exceptional volunteer with the RCMP, the Shrine, the Church, and as a Board member for Elmwood Lodge for ten years. Mom never sought recognition for this work but simply gave it her heart and soul. Mom was a voracious reader and believed strongly in education. She loved to travel, to garden, to spend time with family at the cottage at Weyakwin Lake, and to dance limitless miles with Neil. There are so many things we will miss about Mom but most of all we will miss her beautiful smile. Stella is survived by her great love, Neil, and by her children Avon Whittles (Lorne), Garth Matheson, and Glynn Matheson. She will also live on through the legacy of her wonderful grandchildren Raegan Whittles (Dan Dirk- Pothier), Carter Matheson, and Cady Matheson. Her immense pride in her children and grandchildren was always evident. She also leaves her sisters Leona Taylor (Neil) and Verni Byers (Lyle) and their children. Our family would like to thank the staff at Extendicare and Mom's special home caregivers for their compassion as she faced the health challenges of multiple strokes. In lieu of flowers the family asks you to consider a donation to Elmwood Lodge, the Saskatoon Public Schools Foundation, or to a charity of your choice.
