Obituary of Maya Devi Saini

Maya Devi Saini January 19, 1933 – July 23, 2017 It is with profound sadness and grief that we announce the passing of Maya Devi Saini on July 23, 2017. Maya was predeceased by her husband Girdhari Lal, her parents, and two brothers, She is survived and will be lovingly remembered by her children Sarla (Suba), Pushpa (Laurie), and Surinder (Satwant); grandchildren Sarika (Denis), Sumeer (Alyzée), Anish, Matthew (Aditi), Kenton, Kathryne, Jaysen, Serena, and Justen; and great-grandson, Marco. Maya was a strong, courageous woman who was devoted to her family and friends. She was born in rural India in Bahadarpur , Distt. Hoshiarpur. Having to help her family on their farm, she never had the opportunity to go to school and yet she had great wisdom and understanding. From her humble beginnings, she travelled with her husband and children to Saskatoon to build a new life. She navigated life in Canada with courage, grace, and determination. A homemaker with a flair for cooking and gardening, she used her skills to the delight of friends and family. Her family was important as they provided purpose and a foundation for her life, but the family she built among her friends in Saskatoon also provided comfort, support and happiness. She was proud of her children, but her greatest joy, and indeed her legacy, was seeing her grandchildren grow and develop into intelligent, caring and accomplished people. In her later years, health issues and dementia made life difficult, yet she always remained strong-willed and fiercely independent. It is with deep appreciation and profound thanks that we acknowledge the friends that provided companionship with ongoing supportive phone calls or visits-these meant more than you will know. In lieu of flowers, a donation in Maya’s memory may be made to The Alzheimer Society of Saskatchewan or a charity of your choice.
