Obituary of Brian McKenna

Brian Francis Anthony Gerald McKenna October 10, 1928 – August 1, 2017 Brian passed away peacefully on August 1, 2017, just 3 months shy of his 89th birthday, surrounded by his loving daughter Michele, son-in-law Barry, and close family friends. Brian was predeceased by his beautiful wife of 49 years, Angele, infant daughter Jane, his parents Angela and Dion McKenna, brothers John, Barry and Dennis; sister-in-law Marie McKenna and nephew Brian (McKenna). He is survived by his beloved daughter Michele, her husband Barry, step- grandchildren Carlie and Cameron Nestor, sister Madelyn McKenna, nieces Verna McKenna (John O'Halloren) and Donna McKenna (Eric Furlong), great-nephews Fischna, Tadhg, Darragh, Rory, Oisin, Alex, and great-nieces Heather and Sophia. Brian was born on October 10, 1928, in Dublin, Ireland. He spent his childhood in Dingle, Ireland where some of his fondest memories were made. He returned to Dublin where he completed his medical degree at Trinity College. Brian began his medical career in London, England. It was there that he met the love of his life Angele. They married on July 1, 1959 and moved to Canada shortly thereafter. Brian completed his fellowship in Orthopedic Surgery at the Royal Victoria Hospital in Montreal. From there, they moved to Saskatoon where he practiced at the Medical Arts Building, and City and St. Paul's Hospitals. Brian was highly regarded by his colleagues and patients. He retired in 1995. Brian was selflessly devoted to Angele. During the last 10 years of her life, Angele suffered from chronic illness. Brian's love and dedication was a testament of his love as he cared for her in their family home until her passing in 2009. Brian's relationship with his daughter Michele was extraordinary. Their bond was one of unconditional love and friendship. She was the sunshine of his life, as he was of hers. Brian's beautiful backyard was his sanctuary. It was there that he nurtured his flowers and took special pride in his tomatoes. Brian especially treasured sharing time with family and friends in his swimming pool. He made everyone feel welcome, paying special attention to the countless youngsters whom he taught to swim and dive. Brian also had a passion for golf. He enjoyed many rounds over the years with Michele, friends, and colleagues at the Riverside golf course. Brian cherished his weekly pub nights with his Irish buddies: Dr. Gerry McGarry, Dr. Jim McGettigan, and Des Carroll. Gratitude goes out to the compassionate doctors and nurses at St. Paul's Hospital, both in the Emergency and Observation units. Wonderful care was given to "Dr. Brian" while residing at Stonebridge Crossing during the past year and a half. Thank you to Father Nestor for spontaneously giving his time to come and pray with Brian and his family.
