Preplanning Checklist

Preplanning Checklist

The loss of a loved one can be incredibly challenging for surviving family and friends. However, pre-planning your funeral service can alleviate some of the stress they may experience in coping with the loss.

Select the Style of Service You Prefer

Pre-planning your funeral service not only alleviates the burden on your loved ones but also guarantees that your final wishes are respected. While some families find it challenging to make these decisions after losing someone, your family can be spared from the difficulty of making tough choices.

  • Select the funeral home and director who will handle your service.
  • Determine the type of service you prefer (traditional, cremation, donation, etc.).
  • If opting for a traditional service with burial, decide on the burial location.
  • Meet with the funeral director to explore casket and urn options.
  • Decide on attire preferences if choosing burial.
  • Explore venue options for the service (funeral home, religious facility, special location, graveside).
  • Specify preferences for flowers or request donations to a charity of choice.
  • Choose participants for your service, including pallbearers and officiants.
  • Select music selections to be played during the service.
  • Draft an obituary or outline details you wish to include in your obituary.

Designate Who Will be Responsible

Your family and friends are eager to fulfill your final wishes; they just need clear instructions on how to proceed.

  • Ensure your executor has a copy of your will.
  • Provide a trusted family member or friend with a list of important account information to handle after your passing, along with your wishes for your service.
  • Designate a power of attorney.
  • Prepare someone to cancel basic utility services and subscriptions as needed.

Opt to Prepay for Your Arrangements

Planning your funeral service in advance can offer financial benefits for both you and your loved ones. Whenever feasible, consider paying for all expenses beforehand, alleviating your family from that financial strain. When possible, opt to prepay for:

  • Cemetery services, burial plot
  • All funeral arrangements including casket, urn, flowers, transportation and specialized services
